De naam ervan onderscheidt zich in de geschiedenis en de traditie door de fijne en ontroerende legende van St-Rolende.

Volgens de oudste teruggevonden geschriften (Jean GIELEMANS (1427-1487) Onderoverste van het klooster Rouge Cloître) die door de redemptorist, pater LEJEUNE, in 1900 in zijn werk « Sainte Rolende de Gerpinnes, d’après les Ballondistes » aangehaald worden, laten het verhaal en de legende het volgende blijken :

In 771 waren onze streken onder de macht van de koning der Franken, Karel de Grote, die enkele jaren later de keizer van het Westerse Rijk zou worden (800-814).

Aan de andere kant van de Alpen heerste Desiderius, koning der Longobarden, over Gallia Cisalpina.

In 774 vielen de Franken de Longobarden aan en na een langdurig beleg in Pavia (Povlakte) kwam Karel de Grote als overwinnaar uit de strijd. Zo kon hij zijn rijk uitbreiden tot de Cisalpine streken. Desiderius, zijn echtgenote Ensa en zijn dochter Rolende werden tot ballingschap veroordeeld in het noorden van Gallië.

Oger, zoon van de koning van Schotland, die moedig naast de Longobarden had gevochten, onderging hetzelfde lot. De plaats van deze ballingschap wordt in de « Annales de Lobbes » Pansatio Sancti Lantberti genoemd. Sommige historici denken dat het om Luik gaat. Anderen denken aan Henegouwen of het noorden van Frankrijk. Tot nu toe is de exacte plaats nog niet bepaald.

Rolende besefte dat haar lot met de aspiraties van Oger verbonden was maar ze deelde de vurige wens van haar familie niet en besliste om aan dit door haar vader verplichte huwelijk te ontkomen.

Ze besliste zich aan God te wijden, verliet haar familie en richtte zich naar Keulen waar toen « De Klooster van de Elfduizend Maagden » bestond.

Onderweg (op het parochiedomein van Gerpinnes) moest ze stoppen omdat haar krachten het begaven. Ze stopte in de boerderij van het kasteel van Villers-Poterie. Daar stierf ze in 774 totaal ziek en uitgeput. Op de plaats zelf kan men binnen de kleine kapel een op een muursteen in gotische letters van de vijftiende eeuw gegraveerd opschrift lezen :

« Hic obit Beata Virgo Rolendia ».

« Hier stierf de gelukzalige maagd Rolende »

Its name is illustrated in History and Tradition by the fine and touching legend of Holy Rolende.

If we refer to the oldest writings that have been found (Jean Gielemans(1427-1487) Under-Prior of the Convent of Red Cloister) and reported in 1900 by the RP Redemptoriste LEJEUNE in his work « Holy Rolende de Gerpinnes, according to Bollandistes », the history and the legend let appear :

In the year 711, our regions to the Mediterranean were under the domination of the Frank King, Charlemagne, who was due to become a few years later Emperor of Occident (800-814).

On the other side of the Alps, Didier, King of the Lombards was reigning on the Gaule Cisalpine.

In 774, the Franks were facing the Lombards. After a tough seat in Pavie (plain of Pô), Charlemagne came out victorious, thus he extended his domination to the Cisalpine areas. He condemned King Didier, his wife Ensa and their daughter to exile in the North of Gaule.

The king of Scotland’s son , Oger who had valiantly fought in the rows of the Lombards, underwent the same fate. The place of this exile is called in  » The Annals of Lobbes  »  » Pausatio Sancti Lantbertri « .

historians believe that it is « Liège ». Others think of Hainaut or the north of France. The exact site has not been specified to date.

On this ground of exile, Rolende realizing that her destiny was to marry Oger, but she did not share the burning wish of Oger and her parents, so she decided to flee.

Rolende wanted to devote her life to God, leaving her relatives to move towards Cologne where existed at that time the « Convent of the Eleven Thousand Virgins ».

On her way, reaching the parochial field of Gerpinnes, her forces abandonned her ; Rolende made a stop within the Farm – Castle of Villers-Poterie. Ill, exhausted of tiredness and deprivations, there she died in the year 774. At this place, it can be read inside the small chapel, engraved on a mural stone in Gothic letters of the XV century :

« Hic obit Beata Virgo Rolendia ».

« Here died the happy virgin Rolende »

Op verscheidene plaatsen van het dorp werden ook graven uit het Frankische tijdperk gevonden.

De villa van « Ojète » werd tweemaal in brand gesticht en misschien zelfs geplunderd. Na de Germaanse invasies verliet de eigenaar, die een voor verdediging meer gunstige plaats verkoos, het dal van « Ojète » om zich te vestigen op de heuvel waarop de huidige parochiekerk staat.

De ontdekking van deze villa heeft zoveel waarde dat de staat beslist heeft om het hoofddeel ervan te laten studeren door deskundigen buiten de blik van nieuwsgierigen

Gerpinnes, land for long disputed, located in the principality of Liège and the county of Namur, ended up remaining under the obedience of the counts. From the administartive point of view it was the concern of the bailiwick of Bouvignes and its subdivision, the town hall of Biesme-la-Colonoise. For the spiritual matters the parish of Gerpinnes was the concern of the bishopric of Liège. In 1559, it was attached to the bishopric of Namur. In 1872, at the locality  » Augette  » on the hill facing south , an important Roman villa of the IIIrd century was discovered (located not far from the confluence of the streams Augette and Saint-Pierre) : the villa of  » Aggrippa « , a roman notable. This villa had a frontage of more than 90 metres and was made of three central buildings facing the cardinal points. : west, the building of the junior personnel, south that of the masters and on the east side of the hypocaustes, the bathrooms and games. There was also a room in the basement (it can still be visited today) and was used as a cellar. The house of the masters was a combination of small rooms with walls on which the trace of paints could be seen (pink, yellow, red), with a front body furnished with columns of the Doric order and of a height of approximately 5 metres. The quality of the discoverd objects – colonnades, marbles, mosaics, paintings, potteries objects out of iron and glass – makes it possible to deduce that it was a rich owner who is at the origin of the name of the village.

At several places of the village different tombs of the Frank period were discovered.

The villa « Ojète » was twice burnt down, or even sacked. Anyway, after the Germanic invasions, the new owner, preferring a site more suitable for defence, abandonned the valley of Ojète to settle his residence on the height crowned today by the parish church.

The discovery of this villa is of such a value that the state decided to preserve the main part at the study of the scientists and far away from inquisitive glances.
